It’s June and that time of year when the summer sun starts showing itself more and more. It’s also when I start to remind my patients about protecting their eyes from bright sunlight to prevent cataracts as cataracts are the leading cause of blindness.
The time of year is here again when the weather gets warmer and my patients spend more time outdoors exercising, doing chores around their homes, or perhaps even working in a job that takes them outdoors for the hottest part of the day. Some of them wind up in my office, or even emergency rooms, when they become overheated, dehydrated and sick from too much heat.
There are some topics that are never easy for a patient to bring up. But in many cases, those things that are too embarrassing to talk about are the ones that are having the most effect on your daily quality of life. It’s important to trust your doctor and address your health issues. Even the ones that are uncomfortable to talk about… like incontinence.
There are many different chemicals used to control household pests. They include organophosphates and organochlorines used to kill bugs and spiders. These two chemical families cause dizziness, headaches, nausea, sweating and stomach cramps if they are ingested. Exposure to the skin can cause a minor rash. I do think there’s a time and place when energy drinks can be useful, especially during high exercise moments when you can become extremely dehydrated. But on the flipside these drinks pack in quite a lot of calories with their loaded high fructose corn syrup. Because of that, these drinks are definitely not something I’d put into the “everyday consumption” category. I also think there are better alternatives for a natural energy boost.

To be sure, there is conflicting medical advice available about alcohol drinking. However, the key word to remember is moderation. Heavy drinking always leads to health problems.
